Sun and Wine Route
Algarobbo, Sayalonga, Competa, Canillas de Albaida, Torrox, Nerja, Frigiliana.
Along with a beautiful coastline of beaches dotted with cliffs and coves, there are hills laden with vineyards, white farms and farms where sweet wine, famous since Roman rule, is made.
This route combines the best of the coast and inland, combining tourist frenzy and rural tranquility. This proximity to the beach marks the qualities of the Ruta del Sol y del Vino and forms a duality that is reflected in all its cultural aspects. Along the coast and up to the border with the province of Granada, in the easternmost part of the Axarquía, are the municipalities of Algarrobo, Sayalonga, Cómpeta, Canillas de Albaida, Torrox, Nerja and Frigiliana.
The winemaking process, despite the years and technological progress, remains traditional: after basking on the raisins, the grapes are pressed and the selected must is stored in barrels. Wine production, although characteristic of the whole Axarquía and especially of this route, stands out in the town of Cómpeta. It is not for nothing that this city dedicates the famous Wine Night to these wines. Another star product on this route is the medlar, every year Sayalonga dedicates a festival to this precious product that is served in different ways, such as liqueur, jam and plain. Both festivals are classified as National Tourist Interest.
Torrox and Algarrobo have inland and coastal areas, extensions of wide beaches prepared and equipped for tourists. In Nerja, the famous caves "Cathedral of the Paleolithic" deserve a special mention, offering a spectacle and a dreamlike landscape in the Acantilados de Maro, a nature reserve.
Sugar mills like the one in Frigiliana that produce cane honey, unique cemeteries, restaurants and beach bars with skewers, Roman remains and trails through imposing mountains. This varied route offers a broad view of what Axarquía has to offer us.
