Torrox information

Torrox with its beautiful sights is located in the Axarquia region where there is a particularly pleasant and mild climate. It has been nominated for the best climate in Europe. This makes it an exceptional holiday destination. You will experience spring all year round and enjoy an average temperature of 18ºC. This is due to the mountains that envelop the village and its proximity to the beaches of the Costa del Sol, in the valley of the river Torrox.

Torrox Pueblo and Torrox Costa

Over a distance of 4 kilometers, Torrox is split into 2 parts: Torrox Pueblo and Torrox Costa. It has a subtropical climate with seven beaches covering a total of nine kilometers of coastline. In the background is the mountain range that protects you from the strong wind.

The word Torrox comes from Arabic and means "tower". Studies show that the Phoenicians and the Romans were the first inhabitants of this place in the province of Malaga. Thanks to them, the region developed in terms of trade and fishing (famous for the sauce garum). Later Torrox fell into the hands of the Arabs. They turned Torrox into a logistics center for silk destined for Malaga and Granada. In 1488 Torrox was conquered by the Christians.

TORROX PUEBLO

Torrox Pueblo is the Old Town with the most attractions, the oldest part of this area where you will discover the most historical monuments. It is a beautiful authentic white town. Torrox has many narrow streets, stairs and height differences and a pleasant square. Both restaurants and Casa de la Joya, the City Hall, the church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, the Fuente de los Chorros and the statue of El Miguero are located on this square, Plaza de Constitución. It is covered in the summer months by 700 colorful umbrellas to provide shade. There are small fountains on the square that especially give the little ones a lot of fun.

Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación

In Torrox this is one of the main attractions. The main church of Torrox was built on the remains of a Moorish mosque in the 16th century. This was further expanded in the 17th century. What is striking is the rectangular tower in the outer part of the church, which is topped by a pyramidal spire.

Torrox hermitage nuestra senora de las nieves

It was founded in the 16th century by the Minimos Franciscans and consists of a two-storey cloister. An indoor patio and the stables were used as fruit storage until the 19th century. In the 1970s it became the headquarters of the Civil Guard.

Church of San Roque

On a small square, the Plaza de San Roque, is the Hermitage of San Roque. It is not currently used as a church. It has a 16th century Neo-Mudejar style, a single nave and a main chapel with a semi-circular vault. The facade is made of striking brick and masonry. It is gabled in a belfry and horseshoe arch, as are two of the windows on the main facade.

Casa de la Hoya

The 19th century was a century of great architectural importance. The Casa de la Hoya, also known as Palacio de la Joya, dates from this period. It was the accommodation of King Alfons the Twelfth during his stay in the region in 1884. A stay that was dominated by the December earthquakes in this area. The Jardín de la Casa (The Gardens) deserves a special mention. It was created by the same landscape architect who also designed the gardens of the Paseo del Parque in Malaga. The garden consists of French, Mediterranean and tropical parts and you will also discover a special vegetable garden. The building is now home to Casa de la Cultura.

Casa de la Moneda and the Museo de las miniaturas

The Casa de la Moneda dates back to the 18th century. It is also known as the Palacio de la Aduana (Customs Building). It reminds us of Torrox's commercial heyday. It is named after the minting of coins that took place here in the 16th century. Inside is the Museum of Miniatures, with works by local craftsman Antonio Medina and you will discover an impressive scale model of the municipality, which depicts the city from the 1950s.

TORROX COSTA

Torrox Lighthouse is one of the main attractions in Torrox Costa. It was built in 1864 and it is one of the only public lighthouses in the province of Malaga. The lighthouse welcomes exhibitions dedicated to Torrox's rich history. Within the walls of the complex you will discover, among other things, an archaeological site from Roman times. Inside the lighthouse is the Museo Marino de Torrox (Maritime Museum of Torrox).

There are two other important monuments that are part of Torrox's cultural heritage. These are the 15th century Almenara de Huit and Torre Vigía de Calaceite. Both buildings served as defenses for Torrox against attacks from the coast. Torrox also relied on an Arab Fort for protection at the time. The remains of the fort can still be seen today. In particular the defensive wall (El Portón and El Torreón).

The beaches of Torrox Costa

Torrox has a number of renowned beaches and some have been awarded a blue flag, in recognition of the beauty and purity of the beaches and sea water. Among the beaches of Torrox is El Morche beach, which is equipped with a promenade and all necessary facilities. The 1200-meter beach of Ferrara is also one of the more famous beaches of Torrox, whose access is specially adapted for people with reduced mobility. The latter also has a smaller bay in the eastern part (Playa Chica) characterized by a family atmosphere.

Other beaches of Torrox include the beach of Las Dunas, el Peñoncillo (located near the N-340), the beach of Sillón (small, simple and quiet) and the beach of Calaceite, which you will find near the N-340 and is equipped of adapted access for people with reduced mobility. Finally, in Torrox you will also discover the beach of Vílchez, equipped with a chiringuito, and the 60-meter long beach of Cala Chica.

At the far right of playa de Peñoncillo is our favorite chirinquito, Rincon de Pepe. A quiet and pleasant piece of beach where you can rent sunbeds with the most beautiful thatched umbrellas, the paradise on earth 🙂

PARTY IN TORROX 2023

Carnival

During the month of February, carnivals are celebrated in Torrox, days of fun and color in which Torroxeños and Torroxeños prepare their costumes for the parade and contest and present the lyrics they have been composing for months. The carnival ends with the traditional gathering of murgas of Torrox, which has been gaining participation in recent years, as evidenced by the number of murgas and members of each of them.

Cruces de mayo, May 3, 2023

The raising of the True Cross has been celebrated since the reconquest by the Catholic Monarchs, for which the Christians made their crosses with religious elements.

La Cruz en Torrox, celebrated on May 3, is particularly characteristic, with a series of altars staggered in odd numbers in the shape of a pyramid.

The crucifix is placed as the most important symbol on the highest altar with a mirror behind it. Mastranto, an aromatic plant found in the humid parts of the city, is placed on the ground and seasonal fruits, flowers, dolls and an apple with scissors in it are offered above it. There is a belief that the scissors stuck in the apple are for the person who has no faith in the cross to cut off his or her tongue. On the sides of the altars are vases of flowers with white carnations and around them are large numbers of leaf pots.

Romeria de San Antonio

The already traditional Romería de San Antonio is celebrated for three days, around June 13, in the Nuestra Senora de las Nieves district, with the participation of residents and neighborhood groups.

Dia de la Virgen de las Nieves

August 5 is a day of great festivities. Then Torroxeños and Torroxeñas, inhabitants and people from all over the area, worship the patrons, the Virgen de las Nieves and San Roque. On this day, the patron saints are transferred in procession from the Ntra.Sra.de las Nieves Hermitage to the Ntra.Sra.de la Encarnación Parish, where they will remain for two months, until the last day of the Feria of Torrox, in early October.

Feria de el Morche August 15, 2023

To coincide with the Feast of the Virgin on August 15, the El Morche Fair is celebrated on the coast, welcoming locals and foreigners alike for four days to enjoy.

Fiesta del Turista, Tourist Festival 2023

In the month of September, Torrox pays tribute to the thousands of visitors, from home and abroad, who have chosen our municipality to spend the summer there. The most traditional dish, migas, is the key to the great success of this feast. Crumbs cooked in a giant pot, next to the beach of Ferrara. The tastings of the Tourist Festival are rounded off with the distribution of ensaladilla arriera, sardine skewers and drinks. It also hosts many other activities. The little ones can enjoy children's games and numerous local artists perform. The evening starts with a fireworks display, prior to the concerts.

Fiesta de las Migas

Every year Torrox celebrates its traditional Fiesta de las Migas, declared a National Tourist Interest in Andalusia. The municipality pays tribute to the most typical dish of its gastronomy and invites everyone who wants to party with a plate of migas and a good glass of wine. The ingredients and seasonings with which the migas are made make them a perfect dish for farm workers. When the braceros were in the vineyard and olive grove and it was time for lunch, the patron blew "the conch" to let them know that the migas were ready to eat.

On the Sunday before Christmas, migas are prepared and distributed next to the Almazara market, which are offered to all residents and visitors who come to Torrox. The blowing of the shell indicates that everyone can come and get their plate of crumbs. A glass of wine and an arriera salad accompany the meal, which takes place in a beautiful festive atmosphere. Then the music and dance continues in the Plaza de la Constitución.

Various cultural events and leisure activities take place in several weeks, such as the Vino del Terreno competition or the official presentation of the advertising poster. There is no lack of verdiales bands, nor the music of the municipal band and other bands invited to participate in the festivities.

Feria de Torrox (fair in Torrox)

On the first weekend of October, the Torrox fair is held in honor of its patron saints, the Virgen de las Nieves and San Roque. However, the actual feast of both saints is on August 5. It has changed because the beginning of summer, the men and women of Torrox went to the farms. They had to process the harvest and did not return until the end of September after agricultural tasks were completed. This is why it is a fair for four days in October in which folklore and conviviality go hand in hand with tradition.

Gastronomy in Torrox

Migas is the most typical dish of Torrox and also the most popular dish that can be accompanied with an arriera salad (made with cod, olives, chives, oranges and olive oil), papas al lo pobre (potatoes with onion, pepper, olive oil), Gazpacho (tomato soup), a soup called ajoblanco and espetos de Sardiñas. During Christmas, the potaje de Nochebuena (the Christmas Eve soup) is quite common, while during the rest of the year you can enjoy the sopa de maimones and the guiso de calabaza (pumpkin stew).

A typical dessert in Torrox is the arropía, sweets made from boiled honey. The hornazo is typical of San Juan, and the Roscos fill the shops during the Christmas season.

Finally, homemade Muscat wines, tropical fruits and olive oil complete the typical dishes of Torrox cuisine. The whole is served near the Mercadillo de la Almazara.
